Madcat is a French producer, fan of sampling and MPCs, heavily influenced by hip hop artists like J Dilla, DJ Premier and DJ Mehdi. For the release of his new EP “Petite Musique de Chanvre” on Folamour’s label FHUO, we asked him a few questions. Read the interview to learn more about him, his new EP and his future projects!
To begin, can you introduce yourself briefly?
I’m Guilhem, I’m 27 and I live in France. I started producing when I was 16. I had severals aliases before I chose madcat. ‘Petite Musique de Chanvre‘ is my first solo EP.
What are your influences?
My dad taught me the love of music. First with classic, then with blues and jazz. Now, I listen more to hip-hop, rnb and jazz! But I’m very curious about all kind of music.
My main influence is without a doubt an artist like J Dilla.
How did the collaboration with Folamour and his label FHUO happen?
I met Folamour for the first time in Paris for a gig at Rex Club. It was the release party of the first Pont Neuf VA. We talked a lot, and now he has become a true friend. He first offered me a track on the second VA from FHUO. Then, the idea of an EP grew up.
We really like the EP’s artwork! How did you come up with the idea?
We must thank Valentin for it ! Maybe you know him under his alias Tochigi Canopy (FHUO004). He did an amazing work. I just had the idea of having a cat, and I let him do what he wanted. I felt in love instantly with this beautiful classy white cat.

You’re part of the Pont Neuf Records label, do you collaborate with other artists from the crew?
Yes of course ! I work a lot with two lovely guys, ALVA. They have an amazing label called Virage Records. I was part of the two first VA. We have also a project together, Paris Groove.
I work a lot with Cosmonection and Tour Maubourg as well.
But I collaborate at least once with everyone in the label, Pont Neuf is my first family, we worked together since the beginning of the label and we have known each other for 5 years.
Do you have DJ sets or live shows planned?
Only DJ sets ! Severals cities in France this summer, but the one I want to talk about is the KX9000 release party on July 21st in Paris at Badaboum. His new EP on Pont Neuf is soooo cool !! Check it out if you missed it !
What are the next projects after the release of this EP?
Many things ! I have already few proposals, but the only sure thing is my next EP on Pont Neuf, that will be out in the coming months.
