Interview #18: Solidisco

DYLTS Solidisco Interview

Following their remix for Chromeo and their new video for “Top Of The World”, we asked a few questions to the duo Solidisco! A good way to discover their music and learn more about them! Make sure to listen to their songs in the post and check out their tour dates on their website.

Hey guys! To begin, can you introduce yourselves? When did the project Solidisco begin?

We’re Matt and Don and we started Solidisco in our hometown of Buffalo about 2 years ago.

You just released the video for “Top Of The World”. Can you tell us more about it? Do you want to transmit a message with this song and video?

Yeah we’re super excited about the video, it’s the first actual video we had done. Usually Matt just chopped up cheesy 90s movies to our songs, but we really wanted to do something special for Top of the World. We were blessed to have LILINTERNET come on board to do the video. He’s done videos for Beyonce and Diplo in the past, so we just let him run wild and do his thing as far as the concept and art direction goes.

Your remixes include songs from Chromeo, Kanye West, and older artists like Nina Simone. Do you like to work on very different genres?

I’d say so. We’re always really adamant about never making the same song twice, but we also have to keep our uplifting disco/funk vibe that we believe is our signature. So we reach as far as we can into different genres to stay fresh. Also we feel it’s kind of cheating to say we remixed Kanye West because we didn’t even use any Kanye in the track haha. Charlie Wilson’s vocals are the whole thing so it’s kind of like a futuristic Gap Band remix.

It seems that you are influenced by French touch, what do you think about the new French electronic scene?
Yeah we’re definitely influenced by all the French guys of the past and present. Daft Punk obviously, also the Ed Banger crew. We’re huge into the new French stuff too. We love Breakbot, Madeon, Tchami etc. Definitely some inspiring sounds coming out of France right now. We’re constantly in the studio listening to the new stuff coming out of there trying to figure out how they make those sounds.
