Interview #15: Option4

option4 interview DYLTS

This week, we had the chance to interview option4, aka Brennen Bryarly, from Denver. I first discovered him with his remix for Great Good Fine Ok’s single “You’re The One For Me”. He also produced a couple of addictive house tunes, and just released a remix for Elizabeth Rose. Read the interview below to learn more about him, his remixes, his projects, and most importantly, his upcoming EP on the label Nurvous Records!

Can you introduce briefly your project option4 to our readers?

It’s my attempt to rectify music from it’s rectalness. hahaha kidding that’s an old tribe called quest line I always wanted to say. Ummoption4 is what I perform and write house music under. I try to blend the lines between house and soul in whatever I make.

You just released a remix for Elizabeth Rose, can you tell us more about it? Do you have a particular approach when it comes to remixes?

Well when I got approached to remix it I actually had the choice of doing this single or a couple that aren’t released yet of hers. Let me tell ya, she’s got a couple of upcoming tunes that are JUST as good if not better than Good Life. I’m excited to see how big they get. I ended up choosing good life because of the weird chord progression and fast tempo of the original. I wanted to try and do something a bit slower and more groove oriented. OH, and the vocals are unreal so .. it was a natural choice for me. As far as a particular approach to remixing, I actually try very carefully to keep a lot of the original flavor or feeling in the tune. Basically I try to throw my touch on the track without overpowering the intended feeling of the original song.

You have a new release out later this month on Nurvous Records, can you tell us more about it?

It’s in my personal opinion my very best work. It’s a proper 2 track EP with an A side single and solid B side. The A side “Love Like No Other” is my favorite song I’ve written to date. I’m SO excited/honored to release on Nurvous. That label is so nostalgic and so many of my friends have put out records on it. I’m just stoked to join the fam I guess 🙂

What are your projects for this year?

At the moment I guess my goals are to just keep writing stuff I like and putting it out there. It’s been awesome to see the response of people out there that dig it. One cool thing happened today I guess.. A good friend and awesome producer from Australia just hit me up to do an original collab with him so I’m stoked to see how that comes out. We’re shooting to put the record out by Summer time~ Other than that it’s just option4 all day everyday for the time being.

Do you have shows planned soon?
I’ll be touring a bit this Spring. We’re waiting on some holds to confirm but at the moment I’ll be playing the Fillmore here in Denver at the end of the month, then Chicago the week after and WMC and SxSW in March.

I saw that you’re from Denver, how is the electronic music scene out there? Are there any artists we should check out?

Denver is exploding with talent right now. As far as up and comers.. just go check out anyone on the Night Supply label. They’re killing it. www.nightatnight.com

What are your 5 favorite tracks at the moment?

Hmm.. top 5? Well let’s be clear.. the first 4 would have to be anything by Sugar Ray.. So i’ll leave them out for posterity’s sake. At the moment my fav tunes are:

Do you visit music blogs regularly? If so, do you have favorite ones?

Absolutely. I’m a firm believer that blogs are making a huge comeback. Umm at the moment I follow Earmilk, TheHundred.co, Thump, Caveman Sound, Discobelle, The Music Ninja etc.. basically a lot of the big ones but I keep my list to about a dozen. Don’t have time to check em all heh 🙂

Thanks for answering our questions! Anything you’d like to add to conclude?

yeahhhhh I wanna thank you for the good interview questions ^_^
