Interview #13: Xander Milne

Xander Milne Interview DYLTS

Part of the legendary house label Vulture Music, Xander Milne recently released great tribute edits that you can listen to on Soundcloud. We asked him a few questions to learn more about him. If you’re near London, make sure to go see him on November 22nd @ Village Undergound, for the very special Vulture Music party, with Alan Braxe, DJ Falcon and Grum. More info here.

Make sure to listen to the mixtape below while you read to get a taste of what you can hear on November 22nd!

Hi Xander, to begin, can you tell us more about your background? When did you start to produce music?

Hey, Thanks for taking the time to chat. I started to produce music seriously about 6 years ago but I’ve been DJing and working with audio for a lot longer then that.

What are your major influences?

Lots of early 90’s Hip Hop, Jazz, Soul, Funk, and of course good old House Music. people like Pharcyde, John Coltrane, Al Green, Kerri Chandler, Larry Heard… + great producers like Rick Rubin, Timberland, Rza through to more modern electronics acts like Tiga, Jesse Rose,  Justin Martin… I also find that watching “GREAT” films really gets me inspired production wise and I like to watch movies like some people read books, following a director or actor and really getting into their body of work.

You will play at the Vulture Music party in London on November 22nd, are you excited about it? Can you tell us more about this event?

Yep very excited indeed! Alan Braxe’s label Vulture Music has been around for more then 10 years now and this is a great way to get together with some good friends of the label like DJ Falcon and celebrate. It’s Vulture’s biggest party in London to date and I’m sure everybody will be going all out. I’ve watched how Vulture has grown and evolved over the last few years in terms of events and that’s been really amazing. Also very excited about the next 10 years and what Braxe has on the cards!

What are your projects? Any upcoming releases?

Yep a few releases in the pipeline but I won’t get into that just yet as it’s all for next year. The music industry has really changed to reflect the consumerist nature of society and I’m going to try and focus on actually getting though to people rather then just selling them music. I’ve always been a big fan of the blog Discobelle and they have been super supportive of my new material, which has been coming out in the form of a collection of “Tribute” tracks dedicated to a selection of the important figures of House music. There are so many great “characters” and stories from the early days of House and I wanted to try and share and re-interrupt that by sampling audio interviews and mixing that into my productions. I hope to keep working with Discobelle to get out a large amount of exclusive free material over the coming months that will go beyond the standard “free download” expectations.

What are your 5 favorite tracks at the moment?

5 that’s a hard one…. here’s a few “must haves”

Thanks a lot! Anything you’d like to add to conclude?

Thank you! Check out the “Tributes” on my soundcloud or over at Discobelle AND OF COURSE Hope to see you down at A Vulture party soon… get your tics here for London, November 22nd @Village Underground with ALAN BRAXE, DJ FALCON, GRUM + myself and good friend and all round party bird Steven Siegel.
